Break of Structure vs Change of Character — ICT/SMC Explained
Two of the most important ICT concepts
Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHOCH) are foundational concepts in Smart Money Concepts and ICT trading. They tell you whether a trend is continuing or reversing — and they're often confused.
Break of Structure (BOS)
A Break of Structure happens when price breaks a previous swing high (in an uptrend) or swing low (in a downtrend). It's a continuation signal — price is confirming the existing trend.
In an uptrend:
- Price makes HH (higher high) → HL (higher low) → breaks above the previous HH = BOS
- This confirms the uptrend is intact
- Smart money traders use this to add to longs or look for entries on the next pullback
In a downtrend:
- Price makes LL (lower low) → LH (lower high) → breaks below the previous LL = BOS
- This confirms the downtrend is intact
Change of Character (CHOCH)
A Change of Character happens when price breaks a swing point in the opposite direction of the current trend. It's a reversal signal — the first sign that the trend may be ending.
In an uptrend, CHOCH looks like:
- Price is making HH → HL → HH
- Then a HL fails to hold, and price breaks the previous HL = CHOCH
- This is the first signal that the uptrend is weakening
The key difference:
- BOS = trend continuation (break in the direction of the trend)
- CHOCH = potential reversal (break against the direction of the trend)
How to trade CHOCH
- Identify the trend structure — Mark your swing highs and lows
- Wait for CHOCH — Price breaks a structural point against the trend
- Look for entry — A Fair Value Gap or Order Block left behind by the CHOCH candle is a key confluence entry zone to watch
- Target the next major swing — The prior swing in the new direction
Example on NQ:
- NQ is in an uptrend: 17,200 → 17,150 → 17,280 → 17,220
- Price breaks below 17,150 (the higher low) = CHOCH
- You look for a bearish FVG on the 5m to short a pullback
- Target: the 17,000 swing low
The combined picture
In practice, traders use CHOCH to identify a potential reversal, then wait for a BOS in the new direction to confirm it before taking a position.
CHOCH = "the trend might be changing"
BOS (in new direction) = "the trend has changed"
This two-step confirmation filters out many false reversals.
